Servicio Canario de Salud
Document Management of the Electronic Health Record of the SCS
The project
Servicio Canario de Salud (SCS) is an autonomous administrative body attached to the competent Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands. Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of the health of the Canary Islands population by offering health promotion and prevention services with maximum safety, trust, and quality.
The objective of this project is to implement a document management system that will facilitate access to clinical information within the Canary Islands Health Service for both patients and healthcare professionals. There was a need to integrate different systems for seamless and efficient communication among the various tools used within the healthcare system.
Previously, this organisation had an outdated and monolithic version of its document management system, and it lacked a consolidated disaster plan (backup and restoration). Furthermore, improvements were identified in terms of security (navigation), as it did not have a high availability document management system and was not using the Enterprise version, which includes manufacturer support.
Challenges
-
Achieving high availability of the platform to avoid loss of service and access to clinical information
-
Increasing security, both in navigation and in the event of possible loss of information
-
Integrating the different systems for agile communication and have a collaborative document tool available
-
Enabling communication between the different tools a health system uses
The solution
The solution provided by our team was the implementation of the Alfresco document management system in its Enterprise version, in a cluster configuration, which allows the Canary Islands Health Service to have manufacturer support.
At Izertis, we have accompanied the SCS throughout the migration process, including various versions and security patches, as well as monitoring of the document management system. Additionally, we have provided training and capacity building to the SCS team on the document management system, ensuring they have both the necessary information and tools for its management.
Furthermore, the backup and recovery procedure has been consolidated to prevent potential data loss and improve the security of the document management system.
The result
The healthcare system obtains a robust and incorruptible document management system that guarantees traceability and long-term preservation of all the information contained within it. Achieving this, it complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the National Security Framework (ENS). All of this results in improved patient or user care.
