The World Bank-IGN
Design, development and implementation of the IDERD web portal
The project
The World Bank, as an international organisation and a source of financing and knowledge for developing countries, seeks through this project to provide technical assistance to the National Geographic Institute of the Dominican Republic, the body responsible for the preparation and updating of the basic cartography of the territory.
The objective of this project was to support in the formulation and monitoring of territorial planning and disaster risk management policies to acquire, process, store, distribute and improve the use of geographic information of the Dominican Republic (maps, metadata...).
To that end, the IDERD (Spatial Data Infrastructure of the Dominican Republic) was created, which is defined as a collection of technologies, policies and institutional structures that facilitate the availability of and access to spatial information.
Izertis has been in charge of the design, development and implementation of the IDERD web portal as a tool to facilitate access to information for all project stakeholders.
Challenges
-
Ensuring public availability of and access to geospatial information
-
Minimising user search time for data and information
-
Ensuring the defined project implementation deadlines
The solution
As this is an international project with a very clear basis, management is a fundamental aspect in order to meet the established deadlines and thus respond to the needs set out in the official specifications.
The following sections have been the main milestones:
• Project management and work plan
• Design based on UX and usability
• Development
• SEO optimisation
• Web analytics
• Training and final testing phase
Usability and UX-based design ensure access to the portal's geospatial information (information generated by sectoral agencies, academia, research centres and the private sector) to support the formulation and monitoring of territorial planning policies, as well as disaster risk management, the project's ultimate objectives. Web analytics has also been articulated as a fundamental part of the project so that ad hoc data can be consulted in real time and strategic decisions can be taken more objectively.
The result
The work team made up of experts in Wordpress, web design, SEO and web analytics, under a management model oriented towards full integration, communication and operations between the client and Izertis, allows us to comply with the established service levels. In addition, the management of the risks associated with the established requirements has been included.
In this way, the IDERD web portal can be implemented in a timely manner and based on the needs defined by the National Geographic Institute of the Dominican Republic and the requirements set by the World Bank in order to meet the needs of all project stakeholders.
