Izertis: architects of the new European digital identity infrastructure

At a critical time for Europe's digital transformation, Izertis is leading the development of European Digital Identity solutions. As creators of Identfy - the first Spanish open source digital wallet approved by the European Commission - and strategic participants in the projects that are defining Digital Identity Europe, such as EBSI-VECTOR, DC4EU or WE BUILD, the company offers a unique competitive advantage to its clients: hands-on experience in building the new European digital ecosystem before its massive implementation in 2026-2027.

The implementation of the European Digital Identity (EUDI) is fundamentally redefining the way we interact in the digital space. It is no longer just a vision of the future: it is a reality under construction that will transform every digital interaction for citizens and businesses.

With the introduction of the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet), users will be able to:

  • Access public and private services: from requesting birth certificates to enrolling in universities or opening bank accounts, all through a unique and secure digital ID.
  • Control their personal data: they will have the power to decide what information to share and with whom, thus ensuring their privacy and security.
  • Facilitating cross-border transactions: businesses and citizens will be able to operate in different EU countries without facing administrative barriers, promoting a more integrated digital single market.

The European Commission has recently launched the European Business Wallet (EUBW), a key initiative presented in the framework of the Competitiveness Compass. This tool is designed to be the cornerstone of digital business operations in the EU, providing a seamless environment for businesses to interact with public administrations.

Built on the eIDAS 2.0 framework, the EUBW will ensure secure and reliable digital interactions, reducing administrative burdens and facilitating real-time transactions between businesses and regulators. It will not only simplify bureaucratic procedures, but also strengthen the competitiveness of European businesses by providing a unified tool for accessing government services, processing e-invoices, submitting regulatory declarations and verifying business identities across borders. This is a significant step towards a more efficient and digitised business environment across Europe.

The implementation of EUDI and the recent introduction of the European Business Wallet underline the European Union's commitment to creating a secure, efficient and unified digital ecosystem, benefiting both citizens and businesses across the continent.

Izertis: strategic partner

Izertis' strategic involvement in major European digital identity projects places the consultancy in a privileged position to help clients navigate this paradigm shift with confidence and efficiency.

To realise the vision of EUDI, the European Commission has launched several Largescale Pilot Projects (LSPs). These projects aim to test and validate the technical specifications of the Portfolio in various scenarios of everyday use, ensuring its interoperability and functionality in all Member States. The LSPs bring together consortia of public and private entities from different European countries to collaborate in the development and deployment of innovative solutions in the field of digital identity.

EBSI-VECTOR

The EBSI-VECTOR (European Blockchain Services Infrastructure - Verifiable Credentials and Trusted Organisations Registries) project is an initiative co-funded by the European Union under the Digital Europe Programme, which started on 1 June 2023 with a duration of two years and composed of more than 50 partners from 20 countries, including public and private organisations, academic and technical experts.  Its main objective is to accelerate the adoption of the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) beyond the proof-of-concept phase, unlocking the potential of verifiable credentials and trusted organisational registries in cross-border contexts. The project focuses on three key use cases: education, social security and business registers, implementing solutions that facilitate more secure and efficient digital interactions for citizens and organisations across Europe. Izertis is participating in the project by developing the Enterprise Wallet, whose work has been recognised by the consortium by naming it the reference implementer for EBSI.

DC4EU

The Digital Credentials for Europe (DC4EU)project, approved by the European Commission in April 2023, aims to promote the deployment and development of use cases of the new digital identity framework, testing its interoperability in pre-production systems with a cross-border perspective. This project focuses on the fields of education and social security, addressing the issuing and validation of educational, professional and health credentials in a decentralised manner. Composed of 80 organisations from 22 countries, with the General Secretariat of Digital Administration in Spain and the Spanish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation leading several work packages, Izertis actively participates in this consortium by providing Identfy's Mobile Wallet for the mentioned use cases.

WE BUILD

In February 2025, Izertis was selected by the European Commission to participate in the second round of large-scale pilots as part of the WE BUILD consortium. This project, which will start in September 2025 and run for 24 months, will evaluate the implementation of the digital wallet in B2B, B2G and B2C interactions. Izertis will provide its Identfy solution for B2B use cases.

The European Digital Identity until 2027

The European Digital Identity (EUDI) is moving forward with a structured plan extending to 2027 to provide EU citizens, residents and businesses with a secure and unified tool for digital identification.

Key milestones:

2024: consolidation of the regulatory framework

In November 2024, the European Commission adopted five key implementing regulations that set out the technical specifications, security protocols and certification frameworks for European digital wallets.

2025: expansion of use cases and validation to scale

From September 2025, with the start of the second round of large-scale pilots (including WE BUILD), the scope and depth of implementation will be significantly expanded. Organisations that collaborate with Izertis will have privileged access to these pilots, being able to experience first-hand the benefits of the technology before their competitors.

2026: widespread deployment

By the end of 2026, all EU Member States are expected to offer their citizens and residents a European digital identity wallet. Institutions that have started their adaptation early will enjoy a substantial competitive advantage in terms of operational efficiency and user experience.

2027: private sector integration and mass adoption

During 2027, widespread private sector adoption is expected, creating a cohesive digital ecosystem where secure and verifiable transactions will become the standard. Izertis, with its experience accumulated in previous years, will position itself as a strategic consultant for this transition.

A secure and efficient digital future

The implementation of the European Digital Identity represents a milestone in the digitisation of European society. It will provide citizens with a secure and efficient tool for interacting in the digital environment, and offer businesses opportunities to innovate and optimise their processes.

With its participation in key projects and its commitment to technological excellence, Izertis is positioned as a strategic partner in this journey towards a more secure and connected digital future. Their expertise and innovative solutions not only contribute to EUDI's success, but also give their clients a competitive edge in today's dynamic digital landscape.

Because digital identity is not just a vision of the future. It is a reality under construction.
